Aston Villa Competes for the Antonio Puerta Trophy: A Heartfelt Tribute in Sevilla
2 October 2026
Aston Villa is stepping onto the pitch at Sevilla's Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium, but this isn't just any match—it's a chance to claim the Antonio Puerta Trophy, a piece of silverware that might not ring a bell for many outside of Spain.
This friendly is held in memory of Antonio Puerta, a talented Sevilla academy graduate who tragically passed away in August 2007 at just 22 years old. He suffered a cardiac arrest during a La Liga clash against Getafe and, although he initially seemed to recover, he collapsed again and died three days later in the hospital.
Puerta's untimely death left a profound impact on Spanish football, as he was one of Sevilla's own. He debuted for the first team in the 2003-04 season, making 88 appearances and earning a cap for Spain in 2006. His contributions helped Sevilla secure five trophies in just over a year, including back-to-back UEFA Cups, now known as the Europa League.
In honor of Puerta, Sevilla established the trophy a year after his death. What started as a humble pre-season matchup has transformed into an annual tradition, now in its 15th edition.
This year's tournament is particularly noteworthy, as Aston Villa is the first English club invited to compete for the trophy. The connection runs deeper, with Villa's manager, Unai Emery, returning to a venue where he experienced significant success.
Emery managed Sevilla from 2013 to 2016, leading the team to three consecutive Europa League wins. Historically, Sevilla has dominated this fixture, clinching 12 of the previous 14 trophies, with only Granada and Boca Juniors managing to pull off a victory.
In earlier years, the tournament exclusively featured Spanish teams, but it has since expanded to include international opponents. Boca Juniors was the first foreign club to participate in 2016, followed by teams like Roma, Schalke, Independiente del Valle, Al-Ittihad, and Al-Qadsiah.
For Villa, there's some positive news on the injury front. Leon Goretzka has traveled to Sevilla following a knee issue and could make an appearance. Striker Brian Madjo is also fit again after being sidelined since Villa's 2-1 defeat to Paris St-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup. Meanwhile, Taylor Harwood-Bellis is eager to gain more playing time.
