City Clash with Madrid: Women's Champions League Showdown
1 October 2026
The excitement is building as Manchester City gear up to host Real Madrid in the Women’s Champions League, kicking off at 8pm BST. Fans are eager to see how these two giants of football will clash tonight.
Those Madrid kits are certainly eye-catching, though I'm not completely sold on the fashion choices. But let’s talk football!
City looks poised to take control in the midfield. Expect quick ball movement, with the full-backs providing width. Shaw will be a constant threat, looking to connect with aerial crosses and challenge the Madrid defense at every opportunity.
On the flip side, Real Madrid isn’t likely to engage City on their terms. Instead, they’ll play a counter-attacking game, keeping their front three high up the pitch. The challenge for them will be getting the ball to their attackers. If they can find Schroder, she’ll have Linda and Athenea making runs, ready to capitalize on any openings.
What a heartbreaker for FAK as Inter equalized in injury time against Chelsea! They were deserving of at least a point, and that late goal is a real gut punch.
In other matches, Austria Wien leads Inter 1-0, while Køgø is dominating Servette 5-1 as we head into injury time.
Back to the main event, City appears to have the upper hand in midfield, thanks to the creativity of Hasegawa and Fujino, complemented by the tireless work of Blinkilde Brown. Madrid’s trio of Senss, Jacinto, and Caruso will have to stick close together to avoid being outmaneuvered, but they’ll also need to find the right moments to launch counter-attacks.
I'm particularly eager to see the duel between Casparij and Caicedo. City will likely want Casparij to push forward, testing whether Caicedo will track back or stay upfield. If she finds space on the right, she could deliver dangerous crosses for Shaw, who could prove a handful for Madrid’s backline.
Madrid also made changes, bringing in Athenea and Silvia Cristobal for Janou Levels and Lotte Keuklaar.
City's lineup sees two adjustments from their previous match against Bayern, with Sam Coffey and Beth Mead making way for Mary Fowler and Laura Blinkilde Brown after a weekend win against Charlton.
Manchester City (4-2-3-1): Yamashita; Casparij, Rose, Greenwood, Wamser; Blinkilde Brown, Hasegawa; Fowler, Fujino, Hemp; Shaw. Subs include Cumings, Moorhouse, Clinton, Mead, Coffey, Charles, Beney, Prior, Lewis, Burdon.
Real Madrid (4-3-3): Frohms; Eva Navarro, Lakrar, Andersson, Silvia Cristobal; Arianna Caruso, Senss, Andreia Jacinto; Athenea, Schroder, Linda Caicedo. Their bench has Laia Lopez, Noemi, Pau Comendador, Keukelaar, Dabritz, Bruun, Beerensteyn, Maria Mendez, Irune Dorado, Angeldahl, Holmgaard, San Martin.
Meanwhile, I can’t help but admire the PSG hoodies in that striking shade of blue—more on that later.
Madrid has arrived in team-issue Louis Vuitton gear, and it caught the eye of the Disney studio crew.
City manager Andree Jeglertz has a “business as usual” attitude, which is an interesting way to frame a Champions League clash with a side like Real Madrid. As the men’s team navigates its own challenges, the women’s side is looking to carve out their own legacy.
City recently ended Chelsea's remarkable run of six consecutive WSL titles, and with a potent front three of Beth Mead, Bunny Shaw, and Lauren Hemp—supported by Aoba Fujino and Yui Hasegawa—they're a formidable force.
On the other hand, Bayern Munich almost toppled City in their last outing, leading 2-0 before a late equalizer turned the tide. Notably, Linda Caicedo was absent from that match but is back now. She’s a player who can blend practicality with creativity, and her performance will be crucial if Madrid hopes to claim victory.
Get ready for kick-off at 8pm BST—this one promises to be a thriller!
