Gateshead FC Faces Wage Crisis Amidst League Struggles
1 October 2026
Gateshead FC is currently navigating choppy waters in the National League as they have missed paying their players and staff for September.
Sitting at the bottom of the table, the team is in dire straits, having lost their last five matches while managing to score just once and conceding a staggering 16 goals in the process.
In a significant shake-up, Mark Nellist recently stepped down from the board and pulled his financial backing, expressing disappointment that the club isn't progressing in the way he had hoped.
However, Graham Wood, the interim chairman, is optimistic about securing new investment swiftly.
"Following Mark Nellist's sudden decision to withdraw his funding support for the club, we have been fully focused on seeking new investment," Wood stated. "Significant progress has been made in the past 24 hours, and we are hopeful of making an announcement in the next day or so."
To assist in this urgent quest for funds, Nellist has agreed to offer his shares at a nominal price.
Next up for Lee Cattermole’s side is a home match against Worthing on Saturday, a crucial fixture as they look to turn their fortunes around.
