Ireland's Two-Goal Lead Slips Away in Thrilling Draw with Austria
1 October 2026
Troy Parrott dazzled with two goals, but the Republic of Ireland had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Austria in their Nations League clash at the Aviva Stadium. After a bright start, the hosts watched their two-goal lead evaporate in the second half.
The first half was anything but ordinary, as protests interrupted the play on two occasions. The campaign group Stop the Game made their presence felt when tennis balls adorned with the Palestinian flag and the slogan '#StopTheGame' were thrown onto the pitch. A second interruption occurred when a protester carrying a Palestine flag was swiftly taken away by security.
These demonstrations stemmed from Ireland's decision not to boycott their recent match against Israel, despite goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu opting out. The Irish side is set to face Israel again this coming Sunday.
Parrott opened the scoring in spectacular fashion in the 12th minute. After a clever flick from Adam Idah’s header, he found himself surrounded by defenders but danced through them with ease to slot the ball past Austria's goalkeeper Florian Wiegele.
Ireland doubled their lead just before the break when Parrott converted a penalty after Ryan Manning was fouled in the box. The momentum seemed firmly with the hosts.
However, Austria roared back after the interval. Substitute Alexander Prass found the net in the 71st minute, capitalizing on a defensive mix-up. Just six minutes later, Michael Gregoritsch leveled the score with a well-placed free-kick that caught Brentford's goalkeeper off guard.
Ireland's captain Dara O'Shea was close to restoring the lead with a powerful header, only to be denied by a stellar save from Wiegele, who was in fine form. Both teams pushed for a late winner, but neither could find the back of the net.
With the draw, Ireland's aspirations for topping Group B3 now seem a bit more challenging, as they currently sit in third place behind Austria and Kosovo at the midway point of the group stage. Coach Heimir Hallgrimsson made several changes to the lineup, including the return of Finn Azaz, who received a warm welcome from the home fans.
As the dust settled on a night filled with high drama and emotion, the Republic of Ireland will need to regroup quickly ahead of their next encounter.
