Players Eye Compensation as Man City Appeals Guilty Verdict
1 October 2026
Premier League players, along with their agents, are diving into discussions about potentially claiming compensation from Manchester City. The focus here is on lost earnings that could arise if the club's recent guilty verdict is upheld after their appeal.
Several clubs have already sought legal advice to explore possible litigation against City, should the appeal not go in their favor. But it’s not just the clubs that are in the mix; players themselves have reached out to lawyers to discuss claims regarding missed bonuses, whether from a lost title or failure to qualify for European tournaments.
A legal expert noted that former managers could also consider legal action over lost earnings, highlighting the wide-ranging implications of this situation. Players and coaches from rival clubs might argue that their financial opportunities were hampered due to City’s actions, prompting the need for legal consultation.
As City gears up for a legal battle, they have hired a top-tier legal team led by barrister Lord Pannick KC, whose hourly rate is a staggering £5,000. It’s clear this case could stretch on for quite some time, especially depending on how the appeal unfolds.
City is expected to file their appeal by Friday’s deadline, still maintaining their stance of innocence. Reports suggest that the appeal process could extend into next year if they contest the current Premier League rules under which they were charged.
The new disciplinary guidelines require that cases be resolved within 12 weeks, and hearings can’t exceed five days. City’s lawyers may argue that since the charges were brought in 2023 and the hearing occurred in 2024, the updated rules shouldn't apply, making their case potentially robust.
These new rules were implemented to ensure clubs face penalties in the same season as their violations, but City might have a strong argument that they shouldn't be bound by them.
