Real Madrid Unveils Damning Evidence Against Barcelona in Referee Scandal
1 October 2026
Barcelona’s controversial payments to Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira first emerged during a tax investigation, and now Real Madrid is taking action.
The Spanish giants have presented UEFA with what they describe as "evidence of extraordinary gravity" concerning large sums paid by Barcelona to a former vice-president of Spain’s referees’ committee.
UEFA is set to review the extensive documentation linked to allegations of Barcelona shelling out 8.4 million euros (£7.2 million) to Negreira between 2001 and 2018. This investigation is part of their ongoing scrutiny of the case.
Barcelona has consistently denied any wrongdoing since the scandal broke in 2023, asserting that the payments were intended for scouting and technical reports from Negreira and his company, Dasnil 95.
However, Real Madrid claims their newly submitted dossier, reportedly exceeding 50,000 pages, contains critical evidence that jeopardizes the integrity of the competition and undermines trust in the refereeing system.
UEFA has labeled the dossier as "substantial" and stated that its ethics and disciplinary inspectors will review it carefully.
Allegations have circulated suggesting that the funds directed to Negreira were intended to influence referees, a claim Barcelona vehemently denies.
In a statement released on Thursday, Real Madrid expressed their desire for a swift progression of the investigation, emphasizing the need for officials to take appropriate actions based on the seriousness of the evidence presented.
Barcelona quickly countered, stating that UEFA has not opened any new proceedings against them. They clarified that investigations initiated in 2023 remain ongoing, with two appointed investigators having already conducted their assessments.
The club noted, "We have always complied with all their requests. These proceedings have not been reopened because they have never been closed."
Barcelona further stated that it was up to the investigators to decide on any necessary actions regarding the new documentation and that they had yet to receive any requests from UEFA regarding Real Madrid’s complaint.
In June 2023, UEFA’s investigators decided against imposing any punishment on Barcelona, allowing them to continue participating in European competitions.
Meanwhile, a court in Barcelona has been examining the case since 2023, with the investigation still in progress.
La Liga president Javier Tebas mentioned in March 2023 that the governing body could not take action due to the timeline of the alleged offenses, stating the case is "time-barred in sports law, but not in criminal law."
