Savage Takes Charge: Peterborough United's Bold New Era Begins

2 October 2026

Robbie Savage is stepping into the managerial spotlight with Peterborough United, marking his first role at an EFL club. The 51-year-old replaces Luke Williams, who was dismissed on September 19 after a dismal beginning to the League One season that sees Posh sitting at the bottom of the table. Savage, a former midfielder known for his spells at clubs like Derby County, Birmingham City, and Leicester City, arrives after a stint at Forest Green Rovers. Last season, he led them to a seventh-place finish in the National League, only to fall short in the playoffs. This season, Forest Green has managed just four wins from 11 matches, currently resting in 13th place. Savage's first match in charge will be against Ipswich Town Under-21s in the Jersey Mike's Trophy on October 6, followed by a trip to Leicester, one of his former clubs, on October 10. Signing a “long-term” deal, Savage expressed his excitement on the club's website, highlighting his enthusiasm for the club's size, philosophy, and focus on youth development. “I can’t wait to get on the training ground. I’m a manager who believes in attacking football; if we’re level at home with five minutes left, I want us to chase the win,” he said. Savage understands the scrutiny that comes with the modern game, especially in the age of social media. “I’ve been around long enough to know how it works. I’ll be there on the touchline, backing my players. We have a brilliant squad and I’m eager to get started.” Ryan Harley, who has been serving as caretaker boss, will assist Savage moving forward. Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony didn't hold back in his enthusiasm for the appointment, calling it a refreshing change. “Excitement is the word I associate with Robbie’s arrival. We need his energy and mindset to get us back on track,” he stated. Despite some skepticism about Savage’s managerial experience, this could be just the shake-up Peterborough needs after a couple of stagnant years. Currently, the team is struggling, having scored only four league goals this season and just two in their last 23 matches, dating back to last season. With key players sold and new signings yet to make an impact, Savage has a significant challenge ahead. The clock is ticking for Savage, as recent managers have faced short tenures. Luke Williams and Grant McCann each lasted nine months, while Steve Evans lasted ten. It’s clear that Savage has a monumental task ahead, but one thing is for sure: it won’t be boring.
