Stephen King Comes to the Rescue of Buckie Thistle

1 October 2026

Buckie Thistle is raising a toast to Stephen King after the legendary horror author made a generous donation to their fundraising efforts aimed at securing the club's future. This connection blossomed six years ago when King mentioned the Highland League side in his book, If It Bleeds. At that time, he donated two copies of the novel to the Moray-based club, one of which was auctioned off to benefit their finances. Now, at 79, King is once again lending a helping hand as Buckie Thistle grapples with financial hurdles. The club's interim president, Daniel Farquhar, expressed his gratitude to BBC Scotland, stating, "It is fantastic. We reached out and we are just really grateful for Stephen to take the time to donate something." While the exact amount remains under wraps, Farquhar assured supporters that it’s a significant figure that will help with player salaries and operational costs. He also mentioned that King hopes his contribution will motivate others to step up and support the club. Earlier this year, Buckie Thistle found themselves in the spotlight after facing Celtic in the Scottish Cup, a match that ended in a tough 5-0 defeat. The Highland Jags have been facing financial strain since the resignation of their long-serving president, Garry Farquhar, due to health issues. Daniel Farquhar revealed the club's monthly operating costs hover around £20,000, significantly outpacing their income at the moment. However, there's been a silver lining, with approximately £55,000 in donations pouring in over the past several weeks, which is simply incredible.
