Tuchel Open to Lower Division Call-Ups Amid City Controversy
2 October 2026
Thomas Tuchel has stirred the pot by suggesting that he wouldn’t dismiss players from lower divisions for England selection if Manchester City suffers relegation over financial misconduct.
This week, an independent commission ruled that City was guilty of violating the Premier League's financial regulations between 2009 and 2018. The club, however, is appealing the decision, insisting that the ruling is flawed and unsafe.
While the final penalties for City are still to be announced, they could face severe repercussions like league expulsion, point deductions, or hefty fines.
In the current England squad, players from City, including Elliot Anderson and Marc Guehi, are featured, while Nico O'Reilly was also part of the team until injury sidelined him.
As England gears up to face Croatia in the Nations League this Saturday, Tuchel addressed the media and acknowledged the City case as a significant topic among the players.
When asked about the possibility of selecting non-top-flight players, he remarked, "There is always a possibility. I aim to pick the best team for every occasion, and I won't rule out players just because they play outside the top division. It's all about evaluating each case individually."
Typically, all 24 players in the England setup compete in top leagues, making it quite rare for anyone outside this elite group to don the Three Lions jersey. However, James Trafford made appearances in Tuchel's squad while still in the Championship, although he was an unused substitute until he returned to Manchester City.
The last player to represent England from the Championship was goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who did so in 2021 while at West Brom, and Kalvin Phillips earned his first cap with Leeds before stepping onto the Premier League stage.
When discussing the players’ reactions to the City verdict, Tuchel stated, "This has been a hot topic during our downtime. Everyone is talking about it, so my input isn't really necessary. I prefer to stay out of it."
He added, "The City players are aware and engaged in the discussions, and while we touch on the subject briefly, they seem focused and ready for tomorrow’s match."
